Link Directories and SEO

The number trusted links a website has is just one of the main contributing factors of Google’s ever expanding algorithm. Every since this information has been available SEO’s (search engine optimisers) have used various methods and techniques to build links for websites in the hope that they can reach high natural search rankings.

Just a few years ago many Black Hat SEO’s used a method called link spam – whereby websites could accumulate thousands of links pointing to their site, in turn this would result in good rankings. Various methods were used, including accumulating links via free and paid for link directories.

The question is, what value do these link directories still bring to websites? Well many believe there is no value in this method of link building, however there some will disagree. There is no question that building links using free directories has significantly reduced in value over the years although not entirely diminished. It’s important that websites gather links, if not just for rankings then for indexing and spidering too. You can expect no traffic from your link directories, this is a given.

However if you submit a website to a small number of directories over a long period of time (for example 12 months) then after this period of time you will discover that a percentage of these links will hold value which make the method worthwhile.There are also premium directories available, such as Yahoo’s directory. These premium directories offer listings for an annual cost. It’s believed that because these directories don’t allow every website into their index that what is included holds more value, which Google recognises.Remember when you submit your website to a links directory to use unique keyword rich title descriptions and website explanations, this will help build up backlinks containing the keywords your website is aiming to rank well for.
